Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal), an unhappy history professor, seems disinterested even when it comes to making love to his beautiful girlfriend, Mary (Mélanie Laurent).
While watching a movie that a colleague recommended of a colleague, Adam spots an actor named Anthony Clair, who could be his double, playing a bit role. His interest is peaked and he decides to track him down. The identical men meet, and their lives become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined.
